چکیده

UNLABELLED The caloric test is an important tool for the assessment of labyrinthine function. OBJECTIVE To compare the nystagmus response in the caloric tests with air at 50ºC and 24ºC and with water at 44ºC and 30ºC. STUDY DESIGN Randomized crossover clinical trial. MATERIALS AND METHODS 40 healthy individuals were submitted to a neurotological evaluation, including caloric tests with air at 50ºC and 24ºC and water at 44ºC and 30ºC. RESULTS Comparing the air and water caloric tests, there were no significant differences among the post-caloric nystagmus slow-phase velocity in relation to the stimulation order, between ears and between the values of unilateral weakness and directional preponderance. The slow-phase velocity values were higher with water (p = 0.008, p < 0.001), and cold stimulation produced stronger responses (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Comparing 50ºC and 24ºC air caloric test and 44ºC and 30ºC water caloric test, we observed similar slow-phase velocity values for both ears, higher responses in the cold temperature and in the test with water, and similar results of unilateral weakness or directional preponderance for post-caloric nystagmus in both tests.

Comparison of water and air caloric stimulation using videonystagmography

Introduction: The basic methods for assessing the vestibular system are the caloric tests, which can be performed using air or water stimulation. The aim of the study was to compare the parameters of nystagmus provoked during air caloric stimulation with the parameters obtained during water caloric stimulation in subjects with and without vertigo. Material and methods: The study included 102 su...

THE EFFECT OF ELECTROSTIMULATION ON CALORIC-INDUCED NYSTAGMUS: A PRELIMINARY STUDY

The objective of this study was to describe the role of electrical stimulation in controlling peripheral vertigo. In a prospective study on 13 healthy volunteers, nystagmus was induced with caloric stimulation and the interval of nystagmus disappearance was recorded. This time indicates the basal response of vestibular end-organ. After caloric irrigation, pulsed signal was applied for each...

The dependency of air caloric stimulus effectiveness on delivery tip characteristics.

This brief study investigates the extent and origin of the apparent dependency of air delivery speculum size on the effectiveness of air used as a stimulus in the bi-thermal caloric test, using water as a reference stimulus. Eleven normal volunteers served as subjects. Six caloric stimulus delivery conditions included air with two speculum sizes, speculum only and with a rubber tube extension, ...

Air stimulation in tympanic perforation: inverted nystagmus study.

UNLABELLED Response inversion during warm air stimulation is the most controversial finding seen in caloric tests of individuals with tympanic membrane perforation. In such cases, very few studies explore the possible interferences found in the caloric test, bringing about controversies in the interpretation of test results. AIM This paper aimed at analyzing warm air stimulation effects in in...

Results of Air Caloric and Other Vestibular Tests in Patients with Chronic Otitis Media

OBJECTIVES Air caloric results are supposed to be influenced by anatomic changes of the middle ear. The aims of our study were to evaluate the incidence and characteristics of abnormal air caloric results in patients with unilateral chronic otitis media and without any history of vertigo, and to compare caloric results with there of other vestibular function tests (VFTs). METHODS Twenty five ...
